Perspective

Dave Divine

Two men looked out prison bars, one saw mud, the other saw stars.  What are you seeing today? Are you only seeing difficult circumstances?

I gave the message at a funeral yesterday for a 12 year old boy who died tragically this past Sunday afternoon. The parents, family, his friends, and teachers were devastated. The events surrounding his death were especially tragic. When I met with this boy’s parents after his death, I was amazed at their perspective. God was giving them a special grace at a difficult time, but it was even more than that. They had learned to look for the good in even the worst situation.

I asked them what was one thing that had stood out to them the past two days since his death. The mother said quickly, “the sunrise early this morning.”  She said, “We looked out into the backyard and saw our son’s tire swing, and the sun was rising so beautifully behind it.”   In their darkest hour, they were able to see God bringing the sun up on a new day.

What are you seeing today?  In the midst of difficult circumstances, maybe a difficult day ahead at the office, a relationship problem, or even tragedy, what do you see?   What is your perspective?  God may just show you a beautiful sunrise too.

GOD’ OPEN WINDOW
Rev. George H.D. Reader
(June 14, 2009 - Age 102)
Jesus is Lord!  He is the creator, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.  All things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” Colossians 1:16-17 NKJ.  He is Lord of creation and still has His guiding hand over it.

When He made man on earth, He gave him authority to care for and develop His earthly creation, and we still live under that mandate.   Sadly man has sinned against God and has brought much trouble and disaster upon himself and the earth.  Today many not only do their own thing, but reject and hate Jesus.

But there is coming a day and it may be soon, when Jesus will return, judge the nations and set up an eternal kingdom in righteousness.  Man’s day of earthly stewardship will be ended, and Jesus will reign forever.  At present He is preparing citizens for that kingdom from men who will accept His Lordship now.

While Jesus was on earth He assured us of His Lordship by His mighty works and authoritative teachings.  When he fed a multitude of five thousand with five loaves and two fish, it revealed His Lordship over the elements.   When He gave sight to the blind and healing to the lepers, it revealed His Lordship over diseases  and infirmities.  When He walked on the Sea of Galilee and when He instantly calmed the raging waves, it revealed His Lordship over the waters of the ocean and His authority over weather and the atmosphere.  When He called Lazarus from the grave after he had been dead for four days, it revealed His Lordship over death and the grave.  But His Lordship was supremely manifest when He arose from the grave and ascended into heaven.  Yes, Jesus is Lord and will be forever.

Will we accept this evidence of His Lordship?  He has blessed us with the opportunity to make Him the Lord of our hearts and lives.  It cost Him the sufferings of the cross, but His love and concern for us constrained Him to joyfully endure it all that we might be saved and have a part in His eternal kingdom.

The choice is ours to make - He invites us, but He does not compel us.  Will we choose Him and His Lordship?

Many years ago I made that choice, and He has been my Lord across many years.  Today I see that wisdom and the rightness of that choice and have His assurance that He will be my Lord forever:  even the haunting fear of death is removed.

When Jesus sent His disciples to preach and to do His work, He assured them that “Whosoever confesses Me before men, him I will confess before My Father who is in heaven.”  [Matthew 10:32 NKJ]  He warned them that they would be as sheep in the midst of wolves, that they would be hated for His name’s sake, and be brought before governors and kings for His name’s sake as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.  But He also reminded them that His Father, who marks even the sparrow’s fall and numbers the hairs of our heads would be mindful of them.

Opposition and persecution are tests of our love and devotion.  It was true for the disciples, and it is true today.  When the culture favors that which is evil, will we stand for the truth and righteousness?  When Jesus and His followers are hated and when we must stand alone; will we be true, or will we be silent, or compromise or deny Him and the truth?   If we love enough we will be true and thereby lift up Jesus.  If we are true, Jesus will confess us before the Father both now and at the judgement.

Jesus also said, “Whosoever denies Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”  [Matthew 10:33 NKJ]  “The whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.”  [1 John 5:19 NKJ]  Satan defeated our first parents in the garden of Eden and the whole human race has gone astray.  Satan is a liar, a deceiver, and a destroyer.  All men are subject to his attacks.

During His earthly ministry, the Jews as a nation rejected Christ.  Many joined the crowd as He taught, healed the sick and did many wonderful works, but only a few became His disciples and confessed Him before men.  Across the years Satan has moved men to reject Christ and deny Him, and today Satan is working overtime to accomplish his work.

Each one of us had to choose whether or not we will live for Christ and confess Him before men or deny Him.  If we deny Him, He will deny us both now, at death, and at the judgment.  If we confess Him, He will confess us before the Father and receive us unto His eternal Kingdom.

I Can Only Imagine

I Can Only Imagine

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing him how poor people lived. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm, of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” “It was great, Dad.”

“Did you see how poor people live?” asked the father. The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden; They have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden; they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on; they have fields that go beyond their sight. We have servants to serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.”

The father was SPEECHLESS. Then his son added, “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are!”

Isn’t perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don’t have. Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends and families.

Two Horses

August 28th, 2005 at 1:28 am

Just up the road from my home is a field with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if one stops the car, or is walking by, one will notice something quite amazing.

Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing. Listening, one will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, one will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to her bridle is a small bell. It lets her blind friend know where she is, so he can follow her. As one stands and watches these two friends, one sees how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is trusting that she will not lead him astray.

Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need. Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by God and those whom he places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see God.

Thank you, God, for using us even though we are not perfect.

The Wooden Bowl

August 28th, 2005 at 1:27 am

An elderly man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year old grandson. The old mans hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table, but the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon and onto the floor. When he grasped the glass milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.

“We must do something about Grandfather”, said the son. “I’ve had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.” So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.

Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfathers direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he had dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child curiously, “What are you making?”

Sweetly, the boy responded, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up.” The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening, the husband took Grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, when milk was spilled, or when the tablecloth was soiled.

On a positive note, I’ve learned that no matter what happens or how bad it seems today, life goes on, and it will be better tomorrow.

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

I’ve learned that, regardless of your relationship with your parents, you will miss them when they are gone from your life.

I’ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life.

I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.

I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitton both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.

I’ve learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work, and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.

I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.

I’ve learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch - holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. I’ve learned that you should pass this on to everyone you care about. I just did.

You are a miracle

August 28th, 2005 at 1:26 am

Listen, You are a Miracle

Listen, listen, I am your Lord. Before Me there is none other. Just trust Me in EVERYTHING. HELP IS HERE ALL OF THE TIME.

Perhaps times have been tough for you as often they can be. I won’t ever put so much stress on you that you can’t handle it. The difficult way is nearly over, and My hope is you have learned in it lessons you could learn in no other way. “The Kingdom of Heaven suffers much violence, and it is the violent who take it by force.” Learn from Me, by firm and simple trust and persistent prayer, the treasures of My Kingdom will be yours.

Such wonderful things are for you: Joy - Peace - Assurance - Security - Health - Happiness - Laughter.

Claim the answers you seek. Remember through me, all things are possible. Satisfy the longing of My Heart to give to others. Be an encouragement, be a blessing to someone today. Blessing, abundant blessing, I wish for you both now and always. Peace, and thanks for listening.

Live with a higher purpose

August 28th, 2005 at 1:24 am

People are often unreasonable and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you.
Be honest anyway.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.

Memo from God

August 28th, 2005 at 1:24 am

Effective immediately, please be aware that there are changes you need to make in your life These changes need to be completed in order that I may fulfill my promises to you to grant you peace, joy and happiness in this life. I apologize for any inconvenience, but after all that I am doing, this seems very little to ask of you. I know, I already gave you the 10 Commandments. Keep them. But follow these guidelines, also.

1. QUIT WORRYING
Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry. Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry them for you? Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way?

2. PUT IT ON THE LIST
Something needs done or taken care of. Put it on the list. No, not YOUR list Put it on MY to-do-list. Let ME be the one to take care of the problem. I can’t help you until you turn it over to me. And although my to-do-list is long, I am after all, God. I can take care of anything you put into my hands. In fact, if the truth were ever really known, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize.

3. TRUST ME
Once you’ve given your burdens to me, quit trying to take them back. Trust in me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Problems with the kids? Put them on my list. Problem with finances? Put it on my list. Problems with your emotional roller coaster? For my sake, put it on my list. I want to help you. All you have to do is ask.

4. LEAVE IT ALONE
Don’t wake up one morning and say, “Well, I’m feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here.” Why do you think you are feeling stronger now? It’s simple. You gave me your burdens and I’m taking care of them. I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace. Don’t you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started? Leave them with me and forget about them. Just let me do my job.

5. TALK TO ME
I want you to forget a lot of things. Forget what was making you crazy. Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I’m in control But there’s one thing I pray you never forget. Please don’t forget to talk to me -OFTEN! I love you. I want to hear your voice. I want you to include me in on the things going on in your life. I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with me. I want to be your dearest friend.

6. HAVE FAITH
I see a lot of things from up here that you can’t see from where you are. Have faith in me that I know what I’m doing. Trust me, you wouldn’t want the view from my eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be?

7. SHARE
You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement. Share your laughter with those who haven’t heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none.

8. BE PATIENT
I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much. How can you be so impatient then when it takes me a little longer than you expect to handle something on my to-do-list? Trust in my timing, for my timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush.

9. BE KIND
Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for my sake. I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please know I love each of your differences.

10. LOVE YOURSELF
As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself? You were created by me for one reason only - to be loved, and to love in return. I am a God of Love. Love me. Love your neighbors. But also love yourself. It makes my heart ache when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong. You are very precious to me. Don’t ever forget that! With all my heart I love you,

GOD

Just a note…

August 28th, 2005 at 1:24 am

Jesus never lets us down. He said Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Trust in the Lord with all your might and lean not to your own understanding. The carnal gets anxious but we must continue to walk in the Spirit. It’s always darkest just before the dawn. Remember, joy comes in the morning. to some it sounds corny, but you know what I mean. Cast all your cares on Him, for He cares for your soul.. He is always on time.

Psalm 23 (For the Work Place)

August 28th, 2005 at 1:23 am

The Lord is my real boss, and I shall not want. He gives me peace, when chaos is all around me. He gently reminds me to pray and do all things without murmuring and complaining. He reminds me that HE is my source and not my job. He restores my sanity everyday and guides my decisions that I might honor him in all that I do. Even though I face absurd amounts of e-mails, system crashes, unrealistic deadlines, budget cutbacks, gossiping co-workers, discriminating supervisors and an aging body that doesn’t cooperate every morning, I still will not stop—— for He is with me! His presence, His peace, and His power will see me through. He raises me up, even when they fail to promote me. He claims me as His own, even when the company threatens to let me go. His Faithfulness and love is better than any bonus check. His retirement plan beats every 401k there is! When it’s all said and done, I’ll be working for Him a whole lot longer and for that, I BLESS HIS NAME!!!!!!

Good Morning, Jesus.

August 28th, 2005 at 1:23 am

Again, Good Morning Jesus. Please help me to glorify You in everything I do today - every breath I breath, every step I take, every word I speak, everything I see, everything I hear and everything I think. Help me to see Christ in my fellow man, even though his eyes cannot see You in me.

Help me, Jesus, to show compassion for everyone I meet today and give me the understanding to listen to their problems. If it is Your Holy Will, let me be Your instrument in helping them solve those difficulties. Remind me every minute of the day that whatever favor I do for anyone, I do for You.

Walk beside me in every second of the day, Jesus, and help me to live every day as if it were my last. So when it’s time for me to meet You face to face, You will say, “I know him, he is [your name], I walked with him every second of the day.”
